Stuff i read this week
No longer allowed in another world vol. 3
Hot dang! What a neat little twist on isekai Zetsubo Sensei's powers that were introduced in the last volume. I still super love this series there's so much interesting stuff going on all the time 10/10
So yeah this is one of the most interesting isekai books being published at the moment - it's in that subgenre where otherworlders are super common and they (and their imported culture and bad behaviour) are just messing everything the heck up because let’s face it, only the worst loser nerds ever get isekai'ed.
Isekai Zetsubo Sensei has to clear up these messes, but he rather not because he’s tired (relatable) and would really rather just kill himself, besides he’s got writers block like, REAL BAD so it would be much better to just fall sleep in a coffin you know? Or just take so many pills. Dude wants to off himself so bad. Anyways, It’s wild weird stuff.
It gets weird when you realise that Osamu Dazai (the sensei in this manga) was a real actual author, who did really actually commit suicide in the 1940s. This manga is a what if instead of dying in one of his suicide attempts, what if he got isekai'ed instead. Wikipedia list 4 other manga/anime properties that use this guy as a character. Duno what to think about that. But yeah, books good.
Her Royal Highness Seems to Be Angry Vol 4 - 5 (Final)
Well… that’s over! The name of this series is a real mystery. I don’t think I ever saw her royal highness actually being angry? Anyways, I really liked the first 3 volumes, but ehhh these last two volumes? It was kinda rushed trying to get to a weird ending and was just soooooo over complicated. Too many characters getting involved in confusing battles... it’s just not great.
So, this manga seems to be based on a light novel (that’s not available in English?) that at the time of volume 5 (final) of the manga being released in Japan, the light novel was at volume 8, and nowhere near ending its run. Sooo the manga got cancelled and had to wrap up early and heck it’s kinda a mess. At least, that seems to be whats going on here. It’s just kinda a shame that these last two volumes are so all over the place, the arts still pretty but everything else sucks. Real shame it had such a good start too. It started so strong!
The Otherworlder, Exploring the Dungeon Vol. 2 (Final)
Talking of manga adaptions that probably got cancelled early and kinda end in a messy rush. Wow. Two volumes? Really? Thats it? Okay. Volume 2 is not as good as the first - because it feels HELLA rushed and all the plot developments feel unearned. Real weird anyone would bother to licence a two-volume cancelled project. Disappointed.
Crossplay Love: Otaku x Punk Vol. 3
Beautiful idiots acting oblivious
My Happy Marriage Vol. 1
So there's an anime adaption of My Happy Marriage airing RIGHT NOW on Netflix and its REAL GOOD. Being a Netflix exclusive sucks though - I don't have Netflix (fuck em). DANG i super wanted to watch that show though! How else am i supposed to experience that story?!! Well turns out I've already got 2 volumes of it on my shelf and i just never got around to it. Turns out, books good.. Not as good as the anime though. The anime seems to be a lot slower and that really serves the source material really well. For example, when Miyo leaves her fathers house and travels to her fiancé place, its like a page in the manga but much longer in the show, giving you a much better idea of the distance shes going and the loneliness she must feel. Like, its an AWFUL thing to be put through, being sent off alone and unloved. I hope they do an audiobook of the light novel so i can listen to that version too... anyways long story short the books are pretty good, but the anime is incredible. (you should just torrent the Netflix anime, I'm not a cop i won't tell anyone)
If I could reach you Vol. 5
It was a great volume that’s for sure. I was kinda braced for it to be INCREDIBLY SAD, as it’s the point where Uta confesses all her feelings to Kaoru and eventually moves out (at the end of the volume), breaking their relationship - and yeah it is kinda sad but it’s more so very healing and hopeful?
Like it could have been VERY easy to make this whole volume a drama-filled mess, but all that was offset with Chloe and Miyabi getting much closer and Uta feeling genuine happiness that her friends are closing that romantic gap whilst she’s going through that tough time… shes just so glad for them. That's just a REAL good balance of tones! delicious.
Bonus: Audiobooks
86-Eighty Six, Vol 5
good volume! Introducing the Sirins was a big brain move, as they are essentially what the Republic claimed the 86 were, non-human autonomous drones. That leads to a lot of neato situations when you start rubbing them against the 86th strike package and getting people to examine their identities and beliefs. Still kinda weirded out by all the eugenics pure bloodline shit going on. Someone needs to tell the dweeb writing this that pure blood does not make for hot royals. it makes them fucking WEIRD.
