Stuff I read this week
Hunting in Another World With My Elf Wife Vol. 1
Pretty fun isekai about a dude going hunting with his wife, who is a hot and also an elf. A hot elf wife, if you will. 10/10 good for genre perverts.
My favourite part is actually the little omake at the end, which is a fun little chapter with the goddess that isekai's our protag-kun - and shes just doing research in Tokyo on how to pick a good ‘hero’ to summon. Lady just reads a hell of a lot of isekai light novels and bases her whole summoning ruleset based off that. 10/10
ISEKAI DEATH REPORT: mauled to death by a brown bear whilst hunting
Monthly in the Garden with My Landlord, Vol. 1
A great new entry in the “yuri but with a landlord” AND the “yuri but with an idol” subgenres (also the “yuri but one of the girls works in the manga business because if your writing what you know, and all you know is kiss girl/write manga, your gunna get yuri mangaka yuri manga” genre. I do like that genre a lot) - and YES all landlords are bastards does NOT include this girl. She’s way too pure and stupid to actually be a landlord. Shes more like an adorable pet. At its core it’s a pleasant slow life, slow relationship building kinda thing... yeah these two girls are thrust together and have great chemistry but like, they take their time. It’s sweet
Captain Corinth: The Galactic Navy Officer Becomes an Adventurer Vol. 1 - 2
This is a pretty neat concept- it’s a fantasy isekai by way of science fiction. The titular Captain Corinth gets stranded in a fantasy world after his spaceship is mysteriously ambushed in hyperspace and crash lands on a nearby uncharted planet. All the usual isekai tropes are justified though advanced technology - all your cheat skills are nanotechnology and AI - stuff like that. it’s just a neat implementation of all that junk isekai genre perverts adore, 10/10
The Villainess Who Has Been KILLED 108 Times -She Remembers Everything!- Vol. 1
Heck! What an incredible book! What an incredible start to a story that feels MASSIVE! There’s a lot going on here, it’s drawing on a lot of the best reincarnation and villainess tropes and like turning them up to 11. It opens up with a real economical villainess backstory, setting up who the ‘heroes’ that killed our vileness are and then confidently starts playing with our expectations. I mean… that’s kinda what every villainess story does but this one just does it SO dang well, and then even in volume 1 its pulling all these little threads together SO well. I am real impressed and cannot wait for more. I wrote a little about it here if you wanna see a lil more.
Everyone’s Getting Married Vol. 3 - 4
Dang, there’s some really messed up side relationships here. The actress lady who is protagonist-news-anchor-kun’s old flame is SUPER messed up - like a full on disaster lady. She needs to move the heck on, otherwise, later volumes are going to be an absolute blood bath for her.
Anyways, I am enjoying this a lot, it’s really nice how much trust these two lead characters have in each other. The whole story is about how they have a major difference in opinion about marriage, and they are so open and honest about that, that for everything else there’s a big base of trust - the book keeps presenting situations where you think oh no, here comes a classic romance manga misunderstanding driven fight and then it just doesn't happen, cos they have a chat about stuff instead? IT RULES and just read really well and I’m having a good time - even if it’s straight.
Bonus: Audiobooks
My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer Vol. 6
Real nice volume, its all set in Turnera this time, so no big city stuff - just all quiet small country village life - its all really setting up reasons for Bel to go on his big journey to find old friends, and it does that in a real satisfying way. I like this stupid book a lot.
stuff in the pile for next week
